Swami Tyagishanandaji’s tremendous faith in Sri Ramakrishna

(Art by Shri Purushottama Karant)

One day I requested Swami Tyagishanandaji to permit me to collect some donations for the ensuing birthday of Sri Ramakrishna. He forbade me so I kept quiet. After some days, one evening, a jatka (horse driven cart) came to the Ashrama with groceries and vegetables. A devotee was present with Swamiji at that time. Swamiji asked the devotee to enquire the details from the jatkawala (cart man). Jatkawala informed that the goods were sent by the owner of a grocery store to the Ashrama. However, Swamiji thought that I might have arranged it. So he asked the devotee who was with him to go to the store and find out the truth. The owner of the store came to the Ashrama and told Swamiji that the goods were his donation in kind for the birthday of Sri Ramakrishna. The gift was spontaneous. All were surprised. Swamiji had tremendous faith in Sri Ramakrishna.

He knew that the Lord was the doer and all others were only instruments.

The story of Ramakrishna Mission

A New Book on Ramakrishna Mission and Math

The Story of Ramakrishna Mission

Swami Vivekananda said, “We are the servants of that God who by the ignorant is called man.” Ramakrishna Mission has completed 108 years of loving service to God in the form of humanity, and now stands at the dawn of the Third Millennium poised to blossom forth into the immense possibilities of the future. To mark the event the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, is bringing out a new book, the story of Ramakrishna Mission.

Since Ramakrishna Math, the monastic order brought into existence in 1886 by Sri Ramakrishna the Prophet of the Modern Age, is inseparable from Ramakrishna Mission, the story of Ramakrishna Mission is also the story of Ramakrishna Math. As a matter of fact, the book is a comprehensive survey of the whole Ramakrishna Movement which includes lakhs of lay devotees and hundreds of non-affiliated centres.

In this book you read:

* how a handful of educated young men, inspired by the ideals of renunciation, service and devotion to their great teacher Sri Ramakrishna, started a new monastic order in a dilapidated building, and how it later grew into two worldwide organizations which together have 162 branch centres in India and other countries;

* a comprehensive account of the schools, colleges, hospitals, dispensaries, tribal development centres, large-scale relief operations, etc conducted by Ramakrishna Math and Mission and the contributions the twin organizations have made in educational, medical and other fields of social service;

* studies on the message of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, and Vedanta Philosophy – which form the ideological basis of Ramakrishna Movement – and how these universal concepts are shaping world thought current.

The story of Ramakrishna Mission is a massive volume of 1260 pages studded with more than 130 colour photos. But, to make it affordable to many, the book has been priced Rs 350/- (US $7) only.

We are also offering the book at a special prepublication rate of Rs 300/- (US $6) to those who place their order prior to the book’s release. Postage within India is Rs 50/- and postage for foreign countries (by air mail) is $16/-

The book is expected to be released early in December 2006.

Those who are interested in getting the book at the prepublication price should contact

Appeal - RKM, Ramharipur

PREAMBLE

Ramharipur Ashrama was set up in a remote rural area of Bankura district,West Bengal in the year 1944 by most revered Swami Maheswaranandji( Doctor- Maharaj), disciple of the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi. To start with, Primary Education, Medical help & Relief during natural calamities for the impoverished people were the key activities. With the passage of time, for more than 60 years now, the Ashrama made steady growth in different spheres and embarked upon several new services, all directed towards the well being of the underprivileged people.
Thakur's shrine with a prayer hall, School buildings, Boys' hostels, Monks' quarters, Teachers' quarters, Guest rooms for devotees, common dining hall etc etc came up in due course to make it a comprehensive set-up geared up to manage the multifarious humanitarian services rendered by the Ashrama .

PRESENT MAJOR ACTIVITIES

A) Education Promotion
  • High school for boys, up to class X level ( 798 students)
  • Primary school for boys (125 students)
  • Free Coaching center (68 students)
  • 3 Non formal Education centers (138 students)
  • Night school ( 60 students)
  • Student's Home (150 students)
B) Medical Service
  • Charitable dispensary, providing free medicines to the poor.(Average 60 patients per day)
  • Ambulance services for the poor patients.

C) Rural Welfare
  • Free milk distribution to poor children of surrounding villages.(160 daily)
  • Distribution of study materials, school uniforms, sweaters & tiffin to poor students.
  • Pecuniary help to the poor.
D) Relief -Work for villages
The nature of relief work varies from year to year, depending upon the prevailing situation. For the year 2005-06, the following was undertaken.
  • 1000 new Sarees, 300 new Dhoties, 150 sets of children garments were offered to even number of poor people in 66 villages.
  • 500 blankets were distributed to aged & poor villagers.
  • About 46000 sets of assorted garments were distributed among 12767 poor people belonging to 3171 families of 68 villages.

FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS & CONSEQUENCES THEREOF

To sustain the services in the spectrum & volume highlighted above, steady fund flow is a must. The Ashrama has to depend on the charity of devotees and well wishers. The State Govt. only provides the salary to some of the teaching staff of the High school. Primarily due to the Ashrama's location in an economically backward region, the fund shortage is almost chronic in nature. Inspite of best intentions, the Ashrama authorities are hardly able to organize routine maintenance of buildings & equipment; not to speak of undertaking development work howsoever essential. Natural deterioration of buildings can be kept under control only if regular maintenance is carried out. If not done, damage is unavoidable and Ramharipur Ashrama is no exception to this rule.

VIVEKALAYA, one of the hostel buildings, had to be abandoned as it is in a stage beyond repairs. 50 students are shifted now to a temporary and make-shift accommodation but this is not a satisfactory solution for long.

NORTH BLOCK of the school building is dilapidated to an extent that classes can not be held there any more from the point of view of safety of the students and staff.

IMMEDIATE NEEDS
The Ashrama is in immediate need of 5.5 Million Rupees,to get new constructions in place of the above two (3 Million for Hostel + 2.5 Million for North block).
The new syllabus of the high school is revised to include advanced courses in science as well computer education. To cope up with this requirement infrastructural development of the Educational set up has become essential now. As a minimum,
following is to be done -
(a) Adequate numbers of computers to be arranged with teaching/ training facility for students from an early stage.
(b) Modernize the science laboratory by adding latest equipment / instruments in replacement of obsolete ones.
(c) Update the library with new reference books, compatible with the new syllabus.
This developmental need involves an estimated expense of 2.5 Million Rupees. Thus the total present requirement sums up to 8 Million Rupees .(Equivalent of US $ 170,000 approx.)

The Ashrama has previously inserted Appeals in the local periodicals and also approached listed devotees/donors/well wishers for contributions but the response is not adequate to meet the target. Present Appeal is an attempt to try out new avenue and may the Almighty bless this effort.

REQUEST GENEROUS HELP

'Service to man is service to God'- is the Ideal Swamiji wished people to practise. Imparting education to underprivileged people no doubt comes in the domain of such service . I request sincerely for your generous help for this noble cause.

Statue of famous monk to be erected in Halifax

Swami’s words of an earlier Sept. 11 warned against religious fanaticism
By LOIS LEGGE Features Writer

He called for an end to religious fanaticism. He spoke about the holiness and purity of all faiths. And he spread the ancient Hindu philosophy of universal acceptance.

Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda first brought those ideas to the west more than 100 years ago to be precise, on Sept. 11, 1893, during the World Parliament of Religions convention in Chicago.

In this century, Sept. 11 has become synonymous with tragedy, fear and religious fanaticism.

But as the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States approaches, the Hindu community in Halifax is hoping those long-ago words by a revered leader will resonate in today’s world.

In fact, a statue of the Hindu Swami the first of its kind in Canada will soon stand in Halifax as a symbol of the acceptance he preached a century ago.

A life-sized fiberglass statue of Vivekananda will be unveiled Sept. 17 on the front lawn of the Vedanta Ashram Society, a Hindu temple and community centre on Cork Street which serves about 400 families.

"We were looking for an appropriate symbol of Hindu philosophy, what Indian culture or Hindu philosophy had to contribute to our Canadian society and then we figured . . . that he would be the most appropriate symbol," says Prabir Basu, chairman of the statue installation committee.

The monk’s words are as relevant today as when he first appeared at the convention, becoming an instant celebrity and subsequently travelling across North America, says Mr. Basu, who notes that many wars and deaths have been caused over the years by religious fanaticism.

In fact, the Swami’s speech at the Sept. 11 opening session of the convention, which included religious leaders from across the world, seems both profound and prophetic given the history of world affairs.

"Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often . . . with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair," he told the gathering.

"Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time has come and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal."

He went on to say that no religion is better than another; that "holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world."

But Basu calls Vivekananda’s words "the gift we did not open." People of different faiths are still often more concerned with the rituals than the substance of their religions, he says.

"If you really go to the philosophy of all religions, they are essentially the same. All religions (say) we are essentially divine, we are the children of the God, nobody disputes that. But when it comes to how we worship, whether we bow three times or four times, whether I go to this building or that building, that’s where our difference comes so that’s why that we say the biggest gift that he gave us, we did not open it," says Mr. Basu, a professor in Dalhousie University’s mechanical engineering department.

"And if we had opened that and used what he told us, then we would not have the animosity of infighting in our today’s society."

Even in today’s society, Swami Vivekananda is considered the "spokesperson of Hindu philosophy," says Mr. Basu, noting that in India virtually everyone knows his name. His writings are also well known in other parts of the world, adds the professor, who calls Vivekananda "an extraordinary genius." He became a monk at a very early age and traveled through the poorest areas of India in order to understand "the misery and suffering of ordinary people." And he was just 30 when he addressed the Chicago convention with a philosophy Basu says is still so important today.

He says unveiling his statue so close to the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, is a fitting commemoration of the man and that horrible day five years ago.

"Sept. 11 to every one of us is one of the most tragic days and the tragedy comes from inherent hatred of one group of people for others and so in order to fight the hatred, we really need to cultivate within us that concept of universal acceptance. . . . We need to accept that every path, every culture, every faith is just as good as others. So that’s why we thought this would be the right and fitting response to what happened on Sept. 11th."

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1933039.cms

NEW DELHI: There is fresh inspiration for MPs at their place of work. Life-size statues of spiritual gurus and thinkers Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo now grace Parliament House.

Appeal - RKM, Kochi

Blessed Self,

Ramakrishna Math, the cultural nerve center of India, definitely, has played and is playing a major role in cementing the 'Vedic' legacy and 'Puranik' piety of Indian subcontinent among the people of India and abroad, especially among the youth. The centers all over India and abroad are doing a commendable creditable job in this line.

The Kochi center is in the limits of Ernakulam-Kochi twin city. The center in Kochi is in a toddler state; it has been taken over by the Belur Math in the year 1999. Ernakulam had the honour of receiving Swami Vivekananda as a guest during his wandering days.

This centre, to keep with the pace of time, is to be equipped with all high-tech, advanced modern technology, including the information technology. It is proposed to conduct many programmes for the working youth and support them physically, mentally, intellectually and spiritually.

Glimpses to our activities
  • The Math is serving the poor people in and around of Vyttila freely through Allopathic, Homeopathy and Ayurvedic Dispensary.
  • Helping the poor and meritorious with study materials etc,.
  • Weekly Spiritual retreat and the Balaka Sangha are conducted for the devotees and for the children respectively on every Sunday.
  • Our Swamis and well-known scholars conduct scriptural classes for the public on Sundays.
  • Music classes are conducted for the students twice in week.
  • To spread the Ramakrishna- Vivekananda Vedanta Literature among the public the Math has Book-sales section also.

The centre pinpoints the following features:

  • A Temple and prayer hall.
  • A Free-coaching Centre.
  • Helping poor and meritorious students to pursue their study and enable them to stand on their own feet.
  • Outdoor medical aid to public with different branches of medicine.
  • Supporting awareness programme on hygiene for the people dwelling in the poor localities.
  • A central Library and Reading Room equipped with computers with internet facilities. Special attention to Children's Library.
  • A Book Stall to spread the teachings of Sanatana Dharma envisaged by Sri Ramakrishna , Holy Mother and Swami Vivekananda.
  • V I S T A -Vivekananda Institute of Sanskrit and Traditional Arts.
  • Balaka Sangha for School going children to imbibe the values of life in young age itself.
  • A youth forum for personality development and intellectual sophistication among the youth to fulfill the dream of Swamiji.
  • Classes & Discourses for General public.

Our Immediate need
  • A Multi-purpose Auditorium for conducting different activities.
  • Dispensary, Monks' Quarters, Kitchen/dining hall, Guesthouse etc.
At present we are having only a 60-year-old Math building, which includes - Shrine cum Prayer hall, two residential rooms, one general room, which is being used now as office, and visitors' room and a dining room. Another building which is also very old and being used as dispensary and book stall.

Without the overwhelming support of the devotees and public the institution will not be able to achieve its objects and fulfill its social obligation. Hence the wholehearted support from the devotees and public, business houses, philanthropic trusts and institutions, is requested to achieve this humble and sublime task.

Donations, big or small, will be gratefully acknowledged. Marble plaques containing the names of the prominent donors will be affixed in the respective buildings.

Donations are exempted from Income Tax under 80 G. Donations may kindly be drawn in favour of "Ramakrishna Math, Vyttila" and be sent to Ramakrishna Math, Vyttila P.O., Kochi - 682 019, Ernakulam Dist., Kerala.
